Description

Butterflies are insects with very delicate and often colourful wings.

Behaviour

They have four stages of their lifecycle: egg, larva (caterpillar), pupa (chrysalis) and adult. The adult could live for a week up to 18mnths.

Size

In UK they can have a wingspan of up to 8cm

Distribution

Butterflies are found all over the world but not in very cold or arid climates

Fascinating facts

Monarch butterflies will migrate over 4,000km (2,000miles) each year from the Great Lakes in Canada to the Gulf of Mexico.
