Linn Dean is a steep-sided glen that supports a wide range of dry and wet grassland. In summer, its south-facing bank is ablaze with wildflowers including common rock rose; the grassy slope opposite carries several stands of juniper; and deeper, damper parts support unusual mosses and liverworts

Best time to visit:

  • June to July for northern brown argus butterfly
  • May to July for grassland flowers

    Linn Dean is situated adjacent to the A68, approximately 10 miles south-east of Dalkeith, Midlothian.Layby at the top of Soutra Hill, east side of A68.
  • Restrictions
    Grazed by Cattle in the winter - keep dogs under strict control
