Hadfast Valley

Hadfast Valley has areas of scrub, grassland and broadleaved woodland that provide a home for many species of breeding birds. During the summer the reserve can be alive awash with the music of breeding migrating songbirds. In the winter large numbers of fieldfare feed on hawthorn berries. Hadfast Valley is designated a SSSI for its scrub habitats and associated breeding birds.
Best time to visit:
- October to December for winter visitors e.g. Fieldfares
- April to June for breeding birds

A small track leads round the side of Hadfast Cottage to a small parking area and interpretation sign. - Directions
From the roundabout on the north side of Dalkeith, on the A6094, take the B6414 towards Tranent. After 2 km this road bends northeast, but a minor road carries straight on towards Hadfast. Take this road, crossing over the A6124. The reserve is on the left of the road, approximately 1km after the village of Cousland.
