Campaign Overview

At the Scottish Wildlife Trust (SWT) we believe we can only achieve fundamental and lasting improvements for wildlife across Scotland by persuading others to change the way they live and work. This can be a challenge and we work closely with other environmental organisations in Scotland such as the Scottish Environment LINK and across the UK to campaign for change. As the aim is to often improve current legislation or funding, we work with the Scottish Executive and the Scottish Parliament and use our recognised expertise to influence realistic and positive change for wildlife.

An important part of this work is to raise awareness and bring the issue to the attention of a wider audience. As a result of successful campaigning, we are slowly seeing improvements in agricultural practice with “wildlife friendly” incentives for farmers. We also played a major role in the development of Scotland’s most important environmental legislation yet, the Nature Conservation (Scotland) Act 2004 which contains a legal commitment to conserve the diversity of wildlife. Our campaigning has also helped to secure a future for rivers, wetlands and particularly peatlands across the country using new European regulations.
Over the next three years, we will be focusing on:
  • insisting on ‘greener’ farming
  • influencing planning legislation in favour of wildlife and local sites
  • monitoring progress and encouraging action on the new Scottish Biodiversity Strategy
